What Is the Treatment for Cat Bites?

While most cat bites are superficial and do not break the skin, it is important to know the proper treatment if you are bitten badly. Not knowing treatment procedures can have serious consequences.

  1. Significance

    • Cats carry bacteria in their mouths that can make you sick if you do not treat the wound for infection. Though it is rare to contract rabies from a domestic cat, it is still possible.

    After the Bite

    • It is important to clean the wound with soap and water soon after being bitten. If the wound is bleeding, apply pressure with a towel or cloth.

    Treatment

    • Apply antibiotic ointment to the wound once the bleeding stops and cover it with a bandage. If the bite feels swollen, elevating the wound can be helpful.

    Tetanus

    • If you have not had a tetanus booster in five years, your doctor may recommend you get one to avoid infection. It is possible to get tetanus from a cat bite.

    History

    • If your cat has bitten you, observe him for signs of rabies or other diseases for two weeks after the bite. If you are bitten by a strange cat, it is important to speak to the owner. If the cat is a stray, contact the proper authorities.
