Severe Worms in Cats

Worms affect a cat's nutrition.

Worms are a relatively common problem that can occur in cats if preventative measures are not taken. While some rare and severe cases of worm infestation are fatal, most of the time the ailment is treatable.

  1. Types

    • Worms live in the cat's intestinal wall or stomach lining, and they harm the cat by eating portions of its diet. Tapeworms are small and can be seen around a cat's anus, while roundworms are longer and are sometimes vomited by afflicted cats.

    Prevention

    • To prevent a cat from getting infected with worms, ensure that the cat's litter box is clean and that the cat is given flea medication regularly, as fleas make cats susceptible to worm infestations.

    Effects

    • Worms can cause cats to become very malnourished and, in rare but severe cases, they can cause death. Kittens are especially susceptible to worms because their immune systems have yet to build up.

    Solution

    • De-worming medication must be given to cats for several weeks in order to get rid of a worm infection. De-wormers come in liquid or pill form.

    Signs

    • Cats with worms experience frequent diarrhea or constipation, abdominal bloating, and sometimes have difficulty breathing. Worms can sometimes be seen in a cat's stool or vomit.
