What Is the Difference Between Projection & LCD?

Projection TVs and LCD TVs are the two most common types of high-definition TV sets on the market. There can be some confusion between the two types, especially since some brands of projection TVs actually use LCD screens. There are, however, significant differences in the two.

  1. Flat-Panel LCD

    • Flat-panel TVs are the most common type of LCD TV sets and are generally called LCD TVs. Electricity passes through a layer of liquid crystals to create the picture image on another layer that makes up the outside of the screen.

    Basic Projection Technology

    • Projection TVs use a large lamp bulb to project the image onto the screen. The technology is much like a combination of a video projector and an old CRT TV set. The image passes through the lamp light and casts an image that reflects onto the screen.

    DLP Technology

    • One of the most highly marketed types of projection TVs uses DLP technology. The image is cast onto many tiny mirrors that alternate between reflecting and deflecting the light. The mirrors cast the image onto the screen.

    LCD Projection

    • LCD projection TVs are among the most popular types of projection sets, along with DLP sets. They also use a lamp to project the picture image, but the image is cast onto a large LCD screen instead of the mirror-based DLP panel.

    Advantages and Disadvantages

    • A projection TV can create a much larger image than a flat-panel LCD screen. However, a flat-panel LCD has a slimmer shape, so it takes up less room. It also uses less power and doesn't have a bulb that requires changing every two years or so.
