-
History
-
Tea tree oil is an extract of the Melaleuca tree found on one coast of Australia and was used historically by the Bunjalung Aboriginal tribe. In use since the early 1900s as an antiseptic used to treat fungal infections, shingles and skin sores, it is only in recent times that it has come to be used as an acne treatment.
Considerations
-
Traditionally benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid have been used to treat acne. However, tea tree oil's antiseptic properties have been getting noticed and its use as an acne prevention product is growing.
-
Benefits
-
All natural tea-tree skin products contain about five percent tea tree oil and prove to be very effective in the treatment of acne without the side effects of traditional treatments, such as redness, dryness, itching and burning. Tea tree oil bars work by inhibiting and killing the growth of bacteria, fungi and viruses.
Considerations
-
Because natural tea tree oil products are gentle on the skin they typically take longer than standard over-the-counter acne products. Used on a regular basis, twice a day, you should see results in just a few weeks and regular use should keep breakouts to a minimum. Additionally, tea tree soap can be used as a medicinal soap for cuts and scrapes.
Additional Information
-
Prices for tea tree oil bars range from $5 to $8 for a five oz. bar. The bars are readily available in most health food stores. Products containing tea tree oil should only be used externally and never ingested or swallowed.
