Geographer's Job Description

A geographer is a scientist specializing in geography, which is the study of the earth and its features. Geography also concerns how the earth affects life activity.

  1. Purpose

    • Geographers study climates and topography (the configuration of the earth's surface) to solve societal problems that involve agriculture, business, and urban and regional planning.

    Types of Geographers

    • Geographers have a variety of specialties. They include climatologists, who study weather patterns; and GIS (Geographical Information Systems) specialists, who use computer technology to compile and analyze geographical data.

    Work Environment

    • Geographers work in a variety of places, from educational institutions like high schools and colleges to government agencies and private enterprises.

    Education

    • A bachelor's degree in geography is the minimal educational requirement. For high-level research positions or opportunities in academia, a Ph.D. is required.

    Salary

    • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2008 report, the average geologist made an annual salary of $66,830.
