Orange Tree Harvest Facts

When we think of oranges, we think of sunshine and juice. Oranges are a great source of Vitamin C. However, how often do we think of where and how oranges are harvested? Does this Spark an idea?

  1. History

    • According to Purdue University, oranges used to be harvested by hand in the early part of the 20th century. Today, tools such as limb shakers and air jets have made harvesting oranges easier.

    Significance

    • On average, one navel orange tree yields about 100 pieces of fruit per season, according to Purdue University.

    Time Frame

    • Naval oranges are harvested during the winter and the spring. However, the Valencia orange can be harvested from late spring to midsummer.

    Identification

    • The best oranges to harvests are ones that are heavy and fully orange. However, some Valencia oranges may turn green again once picked.

    Geography

    • Oranges grow best in warm climates like in Florida, Texas and California. Growers need to be careful since frost can kill orange crops.
