Bonsai & Spider Mites
Spider mites are small, nearly microscopic spiders. They spin fine webs on your bonsai. These webs are designed to protect eggs and mite populations. Dealing with these mites takes care and perseverance. Does this Spark an idea?

Effects
-
Spider mites can cause a browning of infested sections of your bonsai tree. Depending on the severity of the infestation, you may need to prune the affected area if it has actually died.
Causes
-
Spider mites can be an indication of a bonsai that isn't getting enough water. However, this isn't always the case. Spider mites tend to be more of a problem in dry, dusty areas.

Basic Treatment
-
If you live in a semi-arid climate, daily spraying of water and rinsing of the affected tree over several weeks can help. Add a few drops of dish soap to the water for particularly hardy infestations.
Nicotine Treatment
-
A basic, simple home remedy for spider mites is to soak a cigarette in water overnight. Strain out any solids and spray the tree every two days for a week.
Insecticides
-
For massive infestations, you may need to spray the bonsai with a commercial insecticidal soap. Follow directions on the soap's packaging for the most effective application.
