Potty chairs allow children to use the toilet independently

Like your baby's first smile, first steps and first word, toilet training marks another major milestone in your child's life. Make it exciting and fun and diapers will soon be a thing of the past.

  1. Ready or Not?

    • If your child stays dry for several hours at a time and recognizes the need to be changed, he may be ready to begin toilet training. Other signs include understanding and following simple directions and being able to pull his pants up and down.

    Equipment

    • To show your child that he is not a baby anymore, use cloth or disposable training pants instead of diapers. Purchase a child size potty chair or removable toilet seat to help your child independently use the toilet.

    Routine

    • Establish a routine of taking your child to the bathroom.

    Time

    • Sometimes children don't think that they need to go and will quickly get up when they don't do anything. Try reading a story or singing to get your child to sit on the potty for a few minutes to allow nature to take its course.

    Rewards

    • Praise your child every time he successfully uses or tries to use the toilet. Use a potty chart to record the successes with a special sticker. When a certain number of stickers have been earned, reward your child with a special treat.
