All cats should undergo routine flea control.

Frontline Plus for felines is a topical medication for the control of fleas in cats. There are no off label uses or other indications for this product. It is manufactured by pharmaceutical company Merial Ltd.

  1. Identification

    • Frontline contains the active ingredients S-methoprene and Fipronil. Both are chemicals used in the eradication of fleas. Frontline for cats contains 11.8 percent S-methoprene and 9.8 percent fipronil by volume.

    Indications

    • Frontline for cats is indicated for use in cats and kittens eight weeks of age or older. Frontline has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use in pregnant, lactating and breeding cats.

    Considerations

    • Frontline for cats should not be used in animals that have experienced an allergic reaction to the active ingredients in the past. Sick or immune-compromised animals should not be given Frontline.

    Warning

    • Side effects are rare, but possible. Ataxia, lethargy and excessive salivation are possible. Because Frontline is a topical solution, some cats may experience rash, itching and hair loss at the site of administration.

    Time Frame

    • Frontline for cats should be applied every 30 days and is available by prescription only.
