SEM Job Description

SEM refers to search engine marketing, a broad category that describes all marketing that can take place within search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo. Careers in SEM can be held under an employer that pays you to handle their online marketing ventures or you can practice SEM to promote your own websites and create income.

  1. Types

    • There are two types of search engine marketing: PPC (pay-per-click) and SEO (search engine optimization). PPC refers to paying search engines to place your ads when a specific keyword is searched for. In SEO, you will work to obtain a top ranking for your website in the search engines for certain keywords.

    Benefits

    • A career in SEM will allow you to effectively market a website to Internet viewers, and in turn, drive traffic to the website. The website will benefit due to the fact an increase in traffic will allow for more potential sales.

    Tasks

    • Common tasks you will encounter in a search engine marketing career include managing PPC campaigns, ensuring the income you, or the company you work for, has sales exceeding the amount spent on advertising. In the SEO subgenre of SEM, you will be building links and promoting your website on article directories, social bookmarking sites and industry-related blogs.

    Considerations

    • When practicing SEO, you will attempt to satisfy the complex algorithms that Google and other search engines use to determine which sites rank at the top. There are several ways to approach this task, and many paths to take in order to obtain the same result.

    Warning

    • Although there are countless theories as to how to effectively optimize your website for high rankings, there is no scientific method to doing so. Search engines keep their ranking algorithms highly classified, and they are constantly evolving, therefore it is important to stay up to date on industry news and change your tactics to adapt to change.
