Puppy Information for Kids

Puppies and children can be a natural fit, but children should know the best way to interact with puppies. This can help prevent injuries to both the kids and the dogs.

  1. Strange Puppies

    • Tell children to always ask an adult before interacting with a puppy. Some dogs are afraid of children and may nip if approached too quickly. Always approach slowly, walking slightly sideways to appear less threatening.

    Proper Petting

    • When petting a puppy, don't reach your hand directly for his face. Puppies don't like this. Instead, allow the puppy to sniff your hand and then pet his chest, back or sides.

    Handling

    • Invite the puppy to sit in your lap or sit next to him on the floor. Puppies don't like to be picked up or hugged. It can cause injury. Don't pull his tail or ears, and don't poke him in the eyes.

    Improper Puppy Behavior

    • Don't tolerate nipping or jumping. If your puppy nips at you during play, yell "Ouch!" and leave the room. If he jumps, turn your back and ignore him. Continue interacting with him when he calms down. Don't ever use physical punishment with your puppy.

    Training

    • Teach your puppy to sit down when you tell him to---lure him in the proper position with a treat. When he drops into the position, say the command, tell him he's a good boy, and give him the treat. After he is doing it well, start weaning off the treat.
