Job Description for a Marine Ecologist

Marine biologists study all aspects of living organisms and their relationship to their environment in and along waterways. This includes the study of genetics, origin of species, behavior and diseases.

  1. Primary Responsibilities

    • The marine biologist is responsible for estimating a count, or inventory, of wildlife and plant populations. The marine biologist analyzes the characteristics of marine animals to identify and classify them.

    Reporting

    • Reports and scientific journals are a part of the marine biologist's work. Findings are presented both in writing and in presentations to schools, companies and the public at large.

    Hands On

    • This job involves direct contact with animal life. The marine biologist works with zoo and aquarium keepers to ascertain the best way to care for animals and to maintain and manage their habitats.

    Education

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a Ph.D. is often required for independent biological research and a bachelor's degree suffices for jobs in applied research.

    Salary

    • The median annual salary for a marine biologist, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, was $55,290 in 2008, the last year for which statistics were available.
