Job Description for a User Interface Designer

Save

Well-designed software reduces the amount of work that the user performs to achieve the desired result. A large part of this goal is the creation of an interface that efficiently leads the user to their objective. User interface designers apply their interaction and graphic design training to organize the best possible liaison between software and user.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • As a user interface designer, your main responsibility revolves around ensuring that users have an easy time interacting with software. You coordinate with software engineers and other project managers to determine design specifications that match technical requirements for the program. Designers draft user interface plans, including flowcharts that diagram the flow of the user interface. These plans help instruct the programmers that code the plans into functional software. User interface designers derive their plans from data analysis and design principles that result in the best experience for the end user.

Education and Requirements

  • User interface designers learn how to create interactive visual layouts by enrolling in graphic and interactive design courses. These programs teach visual design theory, interactive design theory, technical skills and practical computer drafting skills. These theories enable designers to lead users visually through an interactive path that's efficient and easy to understand. Employers typically seek user interface designers with a bachelor's degree in interaction design and graphic design. Obtaining employment also requires strong knowledge of modern design software, superb collaboration skills and experience with the industry that the user interface serves.
