What Is an SAE Number?

An SAE number is a measure of the "viscosity" of a lubricant, particularly motor oil. Simply put, the viscosity number indicates how fast or slow the lubricant will flow.

  1. Source

    • The Society of Automotive Engineers developed the SAE viscosity scale. That group has expanded its focus, and is now known as SAE International.

    Rule

    • The higher the number, the more slowly the oil will flow--an oil graded at SAE 20 will flow more quickly than an oil rated at SAE 60.

    Winter Grade

    • Most motor oils are formulated so that they are less viscous at colder temperatures. The cold viscosity of an oil is indicated with a "W"--commonly referred to as its winter grade.

    Example

    • An oil labeled "SAE 10W-40" has a viscosity of 10 in a cold engine, rising to 40 at the typical engine's operating temperature of 210 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Considerations

    • The SAE number only indicates the viscosity rating of an oil, not its quality. Higher is not necessarily better; your car's owner's manual will tell you the proper grade of oil.
