Hybrid Courses Definition

Hybrid Courses Definition thumbnail
Hybrid courses are completed both online and in the classroom.

According to a recent study by the U.S. Department of Education, students taking hybrid courses performed better than those learning strictly on-campus. Hybrid courses, which are taken both online and on-campus, have many different features.

  1. Identification

    • A hybrid course combines online learning away from the classroom with on-campus learning in the classroom.

    Online Types

    • Hybrid courses can have two types of online learning structures: synchronous online classes and asynchronous online classes. In synchronous classes, students view live online lectures streamed in real-time. In asynchronous classes, students view archived lectures whenever they choose.

    On-Campus Features

    • Hybrid courses can have two types of on-campus learning features. In the first, on-campus sessions are held weekly over a consistent schedule. In the second, on-campus sessions are held during extended seminars or conferences, usually during the summer.

    Benefits

    • Hybrid courses offer students both the scheduling flexibility provided by online learning and the personal interactions provided by face-to-face learning.

    Misconceptions

    • Hybrid courses do not compromise student learning by offering less time in the classroom. In fact, studies indicate those learning in hybrid courses have better overall learning outcomes than those learning strictly on-campus due to the flexibility hybrid courses offer and the independence they demand.
