Ganoderma infection refers to fungus infections occurring in palm trees. Sometimes referred to as Ganoderma butt rot it is caused by the ganoderma zonatum fungus. The fungal infection only affects palm trees. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Symptoms of Ganoderma Infection

    • According to the Web site of the University of Florida, palm trees with Ganoderma infection show signs of various levels of decline. Some trees form a conk, a hard growth on the lower trunk.

    Confirmed Cases

    • The development of the conk, or internal rotting--discovered when the palm is cut down--are the only ways to confirm Ganoderma Infection.

    Spread of the Fungus

    • Ganoderma infection is spread by spores that are formed and released by the conk.

    Treatment

    • According to the University of Florida, there are no effective treatments for infected trees. They recommend the removal of palm trees as soon as the conk is confirmed. Remove the entire tree and as much of the root as possible. Plant another species of tree in its place.

    Geographic Spread of Ganoderma

    • Ganoderma infection can be found anywhere palm trees grow. It is most common in the southern part of Florida but can occur in Georgia and South Carolina.
