What Is a Rated Load of Wire Rope?

What Is a Rated Load of Wire Rope? thumbnail
Wire rope is used for heavy loads.

Wire rope or cable has great strength, flexibility and low stretch, making it ideal for applications like hoists, cranes and guy wires. It is made with many strands of metal wire that are wound or braided together.

  1. Rated Load

    • The rated load for wire rope is the maximum amount of force or weight that the wire rope can be expected to hold under normal circumstances. Similar terms for rated load include safe working load and working load limit.

    Rated Load vs. Breaking Strength

    • The rated load of wire rope is not the same as the breaking strength. The wire rope will be able to handle its rated load for its entire working life, but may break under a single load at or near breaking strength.

    Determing Breaking Strength

    • Wire rope breaking strength is determined during manufacture by testing to failure. A section of wire rope is pulled with increasing tension until the strands break.

    Determining Rated Load

    • The rated load of wire rope is a fraction of its breaking strength. It is calculated to provide an additional safety envelope for working in the real world instead of a test lab.

    Additional Safety

    • Shock or dynamic loading, like a sudden jerk, multiplies the effective weight of a load. Therefore the rated load is set so that the multiplied force of dynamic loading remains well below the wire rope's breaking strength.
