What Is the Protein Component of Milk? thumbnail
Milk has complex and high-quality proteins that are beneficial to the health.

Proteins are a necessary part of the human diet. Proteins power cells, build and repair tissues and provide energy. The proteins in milk are complex, and offer something unique to the human body.

  1. Milk Protein Facts

    • Milk is 3.3 percent protein. The proteins in cow's milk are high-quality and contain all nine of the essential amino acids the body needs, but can't produce.

    Protein Types

    • Milk proteins can be separated into two groups: casein and serum (or whey). Both are unique to milk.

    Casein Proteins

    • Casein proteins are found in the part of the milk that separates into curds. It is easy to digest and contain high levels of phosphorous and calcium.

    Whey Proteins

    • Whey protein is found in the watery part of milk that is left over when it separates. Whey protein is of higher quality than casein and is considered to be one of the most nutritious proteins available.

    Considerations

    • Though milk proteins are generally very healthful, some people have an allergy to or intolerance for one or both of milk's protein groups, causing a range of symptoms, from diarrhea to bronchitis to hives.
