What Is a Bridge Network?

A bridge network is a method of connecting nearby clusters of computers to one another. Each cluster forms its own network, and the bridge connects these clusters. This bridge can be a physical device or software-based.

  1. Business Networking Basics

    • In a business environment, it is common to have multiple computer networks in the office dedicated to specific purposes. These are called "subnets." Each subnet can be dedicated to a different geographical location in the office.

    Bridging Networks

    • If you want these subnets to be able to "see" each other, a network bridge is a common solution. This is typically a physical device that the subnets connect to with Ethernet cables, but it can also be done wirelessly.

    Virtual Private Networks

    • Your office also may contain a VPN, which is an additional layer of networking on top of the physical network. Multiple VPNs can be bridged using software. Windows, OS X, and Linux have different methods of merging multiple virtual networks.

    Bridge Operation

    • The most common type is a "transparent bridge." It receives data packets, sometimes called "frames," from one subnet and delivers them to specific computers in the adjacent subnet (rather than broadcasting the packet to all of the adjacent subnet's computers).

    Bridge Packet Management

    • Each packet has a "header," which contains origin and destination information. The bridge uses this information to create a map of the subnets it is connecting.
