Water Well Maintenance & Rehabilitation

According to the Water Systems Council, regular water well maintenance and rehabilitation is crucial to maintaining the safety and purity of drinking water and the efficient operation of an individual's private well system. Regular inspection, testing and treatment ensure the proper functioning of a well.

  1. Inspection

    • Arrange an inspection of the well and distribution system at least once a year. This includes examining the well casing for cracks or leaks and checking the well cap for water tightness. This process also ensures that contaminating substances are kept a safe distance from the well site. In addition, this process includes inspecting the piping, wiring and pressure tank.

    Testing

    • Test the well water for coliform bacteria and nitrates every year. Conducting additional tests is essential in special situations such as a spill of chemicals or fuels into or near the well or flooding in or near the well.

    Shock Chlorination

    • Disinfect the well through shock chlorination, the standard process of well disinfection by which wells are sanitized with chlorine. Shock chlorination treats the bacterial contamination in well water systems.

    Testing after Shock Chlorination

    • Test the water again after the excess chlorine has been flushed out. Do this within one or two weeks after disinfection.

    Rehabilitation

    • Restore the well to its most efficient condition by various treatments and reconstruction methods. This is done when the well has deteriorated significantly. A well-rehabilitation specialist tests to see if rehabilitating measures will revive the well. Contractors generally use chemicals to dissolve the encrusting materials and high pressure jetting, hydrofracturing and well surging to clean the well.
