Artificial grass requires special maintenance to help it last a long time.

Artificial grass is beneficial in reducing water use, is easy to care for and can save on mowing. It does require special care in keeping clean, treating it against weeds and keeping it free of animal waste. This ensures that it will last a long time. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Organic Debris

    • Organic debris, such as bird and animal waste and pollen, can cause problems with artificial grass. Clean the grass using a rake or blower to remove this kind of debris. Avoid putting feeders for birds and squirrels near the grass.

    Weeds

    • These can be a problem on a synthetic lawn. The Association of Synthetic Grass Installers (ASGI) recommends spraying the lawn with a mix of clove oil with vinegar before and during the rainy time of year and before spring. You can also use a chemical spray made especially for synthetic lawns.

    Cleaning

    • The grass should be cleaned monthly. Do not use a metal rake or brush on the grass, which weakens it. Also, avoid window and alcohol cleaners, which can also damage the surface.

    Children

    Other Considerations

    • ASGI warns against utilizing harsh chemicals, such as bleach, on your artificial grass. This can create a toxic hazard for dogs, cats and other family pets. Any treatment that you use on your lawn should have water added to dilute it down. According to ASGI, this will get help it spread evenly over the lawn surface.
