British bulldog vs. English bulldog

The bulldog breed was originally created in 13th century England. People used the dogs for a cruel sport known as bullbaiting, where a staked bull fought against a pack of dogs. Eventually, sports like this were banned, and bulldogs were bred as pets. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in the late 1800s.

So, where do the different types of bulldogs come into play? The English bulldog and British bulldog are actually two names for the same dog. Breeders use these terms interchangeably to refer to bulldogs. However, if you hear someone mention an Old English bulldog, this type of bulldog is a different variation of the breed.

Types of bulldogs

A British bulldog is the same thing as an English bulldog, and there are several other types of bulldogs too, such as the Old English bulldog. British/English bulldogs have a flat face, which can lead to respiratory problems. The Old English bulldog is a variation of the breed that was specifically bred to combat some of those health issues. The Old English bulldog also looks more like the original bulldogs bred centuries ago. The traditional spelling of this dog that the United Kennel Club uses is Olde English Bulldogge.

Another well-loved type of bulldog is the French bulldog. This is essentially a smaller version of the traditional bulldog. Affectionately called "Frenchies," these dogs are wonderful with kids and families and also make excellent city pets.

American bulldogs are also popular. With the males weighing in at 75 to 100 pounds, this is the biggest kind of bulldog. American bulldogs are descended from British/English bulldogs. American bulldogs are an athletic breed that was bred for working on the farm.

However, keep in mind that they don't do well in the heat. Some dog owners also choose to adopt a mutt with bulldog in him. Bulldog mix breeds tend to retain the good qualities of the breed.
