An assistant superintendent works with school curriculums and encourages student achievement.

In addition to supporting the superintendent of schools and filling in for that position when the superintendent is unavailable, the assistant superintendent also holds a variety of responsibilities within the school system, including overseeing curricular planning and working with the school board.

  1. Support

    • If the superintendent were not able to perform her duties, the assistant superintendent would step in and take over that role either temporarily or permanently, depending on the situation.

    Advising

    • Based on their teaching experience and knowledge, the assistant superintendent acts as an adviser for several committees, including curriculum planning, nutrition in schools and student services.

    School Board Responsibilities

    • The assistant superintendent, along with the superintendent, work closely with the school board. They may be responsible for writing board policies, taking meeting minutes or evaluating board members.

    Personnel Tasks

    • The assistant superintendent assists with recruiting and hiring within the school system. He may also work with personnel files when existing staff are under review.

    Legal Compliance

    • The assistant superintendent must be familiar with educational regulations and requirements within her state, as she will help ensure that the school system is in compliance with these expectations.
