What Is Taoist Tai Chi?

Taoist Tai Chi is a form of Chinese Tai Chi, a martial art practiced for exercise and stress management. While very similar to traditional Tai Chi, Taoist Tai Chi does have some notable differences.

  1. History

    • Taoist monk Moy Lin-shin founded the Taoist Tai Chi Society in Toronto in the 1970s. He combined principles of traditional Tai Chi with Liuhebafa, another internal martial art, to help improve benefits such as balance, flexibility and health.

    Function

    • Taoist Tai Chi differs from traditional Tai Chi because it uses slow movements where practitioners extend limbs to stretch the tendons and ligaments.

    Benefits

    • While early exercises in Taoist Tai Chi focus on strengthening the muscles, advanced exercises concentrate on exercising the mind, emotions and internal organs.

    Beliefs

    • Taoist Tai Chi teaches that people are inherently good and that society teaches them bad habits. One of the goals of Taoist Tai Chi is to get rid of the bad habits and teach compassion.

    Considerations

    • Mediation is also taught as a component of Taoist Tai Chi where learning to quiet the mind is an essential and important component of healing.
