What Is the File Extension for a Script?

Scripts contain lists of commands and operations that automate repetitious tasks. All operating systems, including Windows, Unix, Linux, Windows, Mac OS X and OS/2 use scripts in order to function. Handheld devices such as Palm Handheld and Nokia phones also use scripts.

  1. Function

    • Scripts increase computer efficiency by allowing automation functions. These functions allow programs and operating systems to interact with each other.

    Operating System Scripts

    • CMD (command), BAT (batch) are DOS and Windows command scripts. CSH is a command script for Linux and Unix. Windows and DOS use the "autoexec.bat" file to start up.

    Windows Scripting Host

    • The Windows Scripting Host stores scripts with the WS, WSF and WSH extensions. Windows Scripting Host combines Javascript and VisualBasic functions.

    Program Installer Scripts

    • Windows Installer stores uninstallation scripts as RBF or RBS files. Inno Installation Setup stores installation and uninstallation scripts as INO and ISS files, respectively. InstallShield stores installation and uninstallation scripts as INS and ISU files, respectively.

    Program Scripts

    • Sun Javascript stores scripts with the JS and JSE extensions; Visual Basic stores scripts with the VB, VBE and VBS extensions. Python language scripts use the PY extension.

    Warning

    • Deleting script files can impair computer functions or render the computer unbootable. Some scripts may contain malicious code; however, using up-to-date antivirus software will prevent these scripts from executing.
