Rayon Vs. Silk Thread

Rayon Vs. Silk Thread thumbnail
Sewing thread

Sewing thread varies in terms of fiber content, appearance, weight, elasticity and price. Rayon and silk threads are two of the most common types of sewing thread and are widely available in fabric and craft stores.

  1. Fiber Content

    • Silk is a natural fiber that is harvested from the cocoons of silkworms. Rayon is also a natural fiber. It is derived from wood pulp.

    Elasticity

    • Silk is a relatively stretchy fiber, so silk thread can be used to sew stretch fabrics. In contrast, rayon thread is relatively inelastic.

    Texture

    • Rayon thread is smooth and soft to the touch. Silk varies in texture from very smooth to quite rough.

    Appearance

    • Both silk and rayon threads have a natural, light-reflecting sheen. They both readily absorb dye and are available in a wide range of colors.

    Price

    • Silk threads are one of the most expensive of the commonly used thread types. Rayon thread is usually a cheaper option.
