A social science assistant is a person who assists social scientists with research, laboratory analysis data management and quality control. The work associated with this position is multifaceted and requires other areas of expertise, as well.

  1. Test Subjects

    • A social science assistant is responsible for screening potential test subjects in order to determine their suitability for the study and, if accepted, to track their progress. Additionally, the assistant must obtain the informed consent of all participants or their guardians.

    Computer Skills

    • A person in this position must possess adequate knowledge of the computer programs necessary to manage databases, perform analysis, create graphs and conduct Internet-based research.

    Literary Work

    • According to CareerPlanner.com, social science assistants are responsible for the creation of fact sheets, reports, manuscripts and presentations that summarize research results.

    Onsite Contributions

    • A research assistant contributes to the design of a successful program of investigation. Additionally, the assistant is required to set up, conduct and record the final results of the study.

    Presentations

    • Upon its completion, it is necessary to present the study results to the original research group, at meetings, through scientific publications and through other vehicles of information dissemination.
