Bad Tank of Gas Symptoms

A gasoline-powered engine requires clean gas that is sufficient in octane and lower in water content in order to keep the engine running at prime performance levels. Any bad gas powering the engine will result in the engine becoming disrupted and cause a variety of performance-related symptoms.

  1. Engine Pinging

    • A common symptom of bad gas is pinging, or knocking, resulting from poor or incomplete engine combustion. This is caused by the bad gas not igniting and not burning inside the engine cylinders as well as it should.

    Reduced Engine Power

    • Poor engine performance and reduced engine power generally results from bad gas. Disruption in normal engine combustion can cause the reduction in power and impede normal performance.

    Engine Hesitation

    • Bad gas will typically cause the engine to hesitate or stumble during vehicle acceleration.

    Hard-Starting

    • An engine that is hard to start is often a symptom of bad gas in the tank. Ignition is dependent on a clean and steady flow of high-quality gas. Bad gas that is unclean and low in octane or high in water content can prevent initial engine combustion, making it harder to start your vehicle.

    Continually Running

    • If the engine continues to run after the engine has been turned off, it might be the result of a bad tank of gas. The engine may continue running for several seconds after it has already been turned off.
