Basics

Cashiers sell goods and services to customers. They generally use a computerized cash register with a scanner or a calculator to total costs and provide correct change. They also handle returns and exchanges, often with the help of a manager. They count the cash on hand at the beginning and end of their shifts to ensure it matches sales and returns.

Bagging

Cashiers may package purchases for customers during the transaction, or there may be a separate bagger (or customers may be responsible for bagging their own purchases).

Answering Questions

Cashiers may assist customers with questions about merchandise, services and/or store policies.

Stocking

Cashiers may stock and organize goods as directed by a manager or merchandiser.
