What Are the Duties of Cashiers?

The duties of cashiers vary from store to store, but always include handling and counting money and interacting with customers during transactions.

  1. Basics

    • Cashiers sell goods and services to customers. They generally use a computerized cash register with a scanner or a calculator to total costs and provide correct change. They also handle returns and exchanges, often with the help of a manager. They count the cash on hand at the beginning and end of their shifts to ensure it matches sales and returns.

    Bagging

    • Cashiers may package purchases for customers during the transaction, or there may be a separate bagger (or customers may be responsible for bagging their own purchases).

    Answering Questions

    • Cashiers may assist customers with questions about merchandise, services and/or store policies.

    Stocking

    • Cashiers may stock and organize goods as directed by a manager or merchandiser.

    Cleaning

    • Cashiers may help clean the store and cashier counter areas, including dusting and cleaning merchandise.

    Opening and Closing

    • Cashiers often conduct or assist with opening and closing duties, including counting cash register drawers, putting away scattered merchandise and locking the store.
