Director of Children & Family Ministry Job Description

A person in this position generally works for a church and manages programs for children and their families from preschool age through about the 5th or 6th grade. A love of children and a general understanding of their development is essential for this role.

  1. Administration

    • This job often requires attention to administrative tasks such as managing a budget, coordinating volunteers, keeping attendance records and ordering supplies.

    Program Facilitation

    • The director is usually responsible for special children's and family programming such as Vacation Bible School and may also manage regular programming such as youth groups and the Sunday School program.

    Supervision

    • Many of these jobs require that the director supervise one or more assistants and sometimes a number of volunteer workers. Nursery staff may also fall under the direction of the person holding this job, depending on how the church's administration is structured.

    Educational Requirements

    • Some positions require a bachelor's degree with a focus in early childhood education. Formal religious study is also sometimes required or at least preferred.

    Statement of Faith

    • Many churches require that all potential staff submit a Statement of Faith detailing their personal beliefs and journey in the Christian faith. This statement must match the church's belief system.
