Aviation Scheduler / Dispatcher Job Description

The aircraft flight dispatcher performs the preflight duties for the aircrew. When the pilots arrive for duty, the dispatcher provides them with the route, weather, fuel load, aircraft weight and any other information related to the safety of the flight.

  1. Aircraft Status

    • The dispatcher reviews the aircraft's maintenance status, weight limitations, and proper loading of cargo and fuel.

    Route Planning

    • The dispatcher determines the route of flight based on weather conditions, aircraft performance and the aircraft's limitations.

    Reporting

    • Reservation agents, airport station agents and air traffic control all receive information from the dispatcher regarding the flight's departure time, status of the flight while it is en-route and estimated arrival times.

    Dispatcher Certificate

    • To qualify as a dispatcher you must pass an oral and written exam administered by the Federal Aviation Administration. To take the exam you must tgraduate from an approved training course or have previous experience in airline or military in-flight operations.

    Working Conditions

    • Dispatchers work a variety of hours, including nights, weekends and holidays. The salaries for dispatchers range from the $25,000 to over $100,000 for dispatch managers.
