Job Description of a Bank Proof Operator

Bank proof operators process checks and bank drafts and, in some cases, may process food stamp transactions or oversee batch processing of checks.

Daily Tasks

Daily tasks of bank proof operators may include processing checks through an encoding machine that places a magnetic ink character recognition print, or MICR, of the amount and other missing information that is needed along the bottom of the check. Proof operators also balance and reconcile daily deposits and prepare items for batch processing. The magnetic ink, which is different from a photocopy, allows the checks to be batch-processed or read through a machine to direct the funds to the right accounts.

Skills

Bank proof operator skills include simple math and problem-solving abilities and the ability to use a number pad quickly and accurately. The number pad is on a 10-key machine that encodes the check with the MICR line.

Education and Requirements

Bank proof operators are required to have a high school degree or the equivalent and math skills. A background check may also be required.

Bank proof operators earned an average annual salary of $38,000 as of 2014, according to Indeed.com
