What is an AVi File?
-
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave. It is a file format that is basically a container for multimedia content. AVI files contain the audio and video data in one file. This allows synchronous audio/video playback of a file.
Introduction of AVI
-
The AVI format was created by Microsoft in 1992 and introduced it as a component of their Video for Windows. In 1996 a group called Matrox Open DML created a file extension which is widely used and commonly referred to as AVI 2.0.

How AVI Works
-
The AVI format breaks a files data into pieces. One of the pieces is given a "hdrl" tag; this piece contains data about the video frame rate. The second piece of the file contains the actual audio and video data of the file and has a "movi" tag. There is an optional third piece of the file which is a index of the file.
Encoding and Decoding AVI
-
Codec software is used to encode and decode the audio and visual data in the "movi" piece of the file. Codec software handles the translation of the raw data and the compressed format data used in the file pieces.
AVI Compression
-
AVI files can use data that has been compressed by just about any compression scheme, including motion jpeg, mpeg, cinepak, full frame and any of the other numerous compression methods.
