Is It Safe to Use Insecticidal Soap on Citrus Trees?

Citrus trees are vulnerable to many insect pests. According to the Master Gardeners of San Diego, citrus trees can be harmed by aphids, whiteflies and scale insects. Insecticidal soap is recommended for controlling these pests. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Effects

    • Aphids remove leaf sap and may slow growth of young citrus trees. Whiteflies cause leaves to yellow and drop from trees. Scale insects stunt plant growth.

    Significance

    • Mild insect infestations are rarely harmful to citrus trees. A blast of water frequently removes the bugs. The Master Gardeners suggest insecticidal soap for severe infestations.

    Function

    • Insecticidal soap kills vulnerable insects by washing off their waxy or protective coating and causing internal damage.

    Benefits

    • Insecticidal soaps are made from natural products and may offer nutrient value when they break down after spraying.

    Drawbacks

    • Insecticidal soap works only on direct contact. Repeat applications are required for scale insects. It is not effective on more resistant pests.
