History
-
The modern Easter lily has been developed from wild lilies that grow in Japan. Hybrid bulbs were brought to the Pacific Northwest during World War I by a soldier named Louis Houghton.
Plant Bulbs
-
The bulbs are shipped, planted and forced to blossom in time for Easter in greenhouses. It can take 1,000 days for a bulb to grow to appropriate size for a commercial flowering plant.
-
Buds
-
The plump, puffy buds will blossom within one to three days. A tight bud will take several days to blossom out.
Easter Lily Blossoms
-
Easter lily blossoms can last in an arrangement up to 14 days. It is important to remove the pollen-laden stamens to give a longer life to the flower.
Cut Flower
-
The stem with the lily blossom is cut on a slant to remove it from the plant. The cut flower must be immediately placed in water.
Easter Lily Bouquets
-
Lilies can be used in church, funeral or wedding floral arrangements at Easter time. The spring blossoms can be used alone or with iris, daffodils and other fresh cut flowers.
