DLP Rear Projection TVs Vs. LCDs

DLP rear projection TVs and LCD TVs can make some consumers pull their hair out when deciding on which to purchase. The decision shouldn't be a big burden--both TVs provide great pictures and have great features. However, there are a few differences of which every consumer should be aware.

  1. Contrast

    • Contrast is mainly determined by the size of the TV. A large DLP will display higher quality black levels than a large LCD. Smaller LCDs however, provide superb black levels.

    Clarity

    • Smaller screens generally produce clearer images. DLPs have built-in scalers to raise or lower resolution signals. LCDs, within their optimum viewing distance range, will display finely detailed scenes with more clarity than DLPs.

    Affordability

    • The 1080p DLP projection TVs tend to be less expensive than LCDs. 1080p is important because it's the highest quality high definition format.

    Energy Efficiency

    • DLP projection TVs consume less power than LCDs that are similar in size.

    Lifespan

    • An LCD will normally last 60,000 hours, while DLP projection TVs will require lamps to be replaced every 5,000 to 8,000 hours.
