Information on Glue Sticks

Glue sticks are adhesive products found in a tube or cylindrical container. They are commonly used in arts and crafts for gluing paper, felt and other light objects together.

  1. Varieties

    • Glue sticks are now manufactured in a variety of sizes and colors. They can also be non-toxic, washable and acid-free.

    History

    • In 1969, the German adhesive manufacturer Henkel invented the glue stick, which was modeled after lipstick applicators.

    Twist Applicator

    • Twisting the knob on the bottom of a glue stick pushes up a small platform inside the tube, which is threaded to the knob. This force squeezes the adhesive out of the top of the tube at the desired level.

    Brands

    • Pritt, the original brand released by Henkel, is still unanimously used today, along with other sticks from Elmers, 3M, UHU, Kores and Snopake.

    Safety

    • Although most glue sticks do not contain harmful solvents, they have been banned in schools for fear of ingestion.
