IBS Related to Urinary Tract Infections

A urinary tract infection (UTI) causes pain in the abdomen. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), similarly, presents with cramping in the abdomen, in addition to bloating, gas and diarrhea. If you have IBS, you may be more likely to develop a UTI.

UTI Symptoms

A UTI can be recognized by the urgent need to urinate, but only expelling small amounts at a time. It may also burn when you urinate.

IBS Causes

IBS can be triggered by certain foods and drinks, like vegetables or milk. Stress and hormonal changes can irritate IBS further.

IBS-Related UTI

UTI is caused by fecal bacteria infiltrating the urinary tract. Those who suffer from IBS may struggle in cleansing themselves completely, which leads to fecal bacteria getting into the tract, most commonly in women, since the opening of the urethra is in such close proximity to the anus.

Treatment

Your doctor will prescribe antibiotics for the UTI. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water and cranberry juice, to promote more frequent urination and relief from pain.

Prevention

If you suffer from IBS, ensure that you cleanse yourself thoroughly after each trip to the bathroom.
