Welding and fabricating involves using heat or electricity to join pieces of metal for construction or manufacturing purposes. Welder fabricators are the professionals who perform this process.
Using technical drawings or plans as a guide, welder fabricators use tools to create a joint or intersection of two metal pieces. Welder fabricators then examine their work to ensure the joint is strong and move on to the next joint called for in the plan.
Different types of welder fabricators use different techniques--for example, arc-welders use electrical current. Some fabricators operate computers that perform the actual welding, which is known as automated welding.
The work of welder fabricators requires specialized training, which may occur as part of a high school vocation-technical program or a post-secondary diploma program at a trade school. Other welder fabricators earn associate's degrees in welding from community or junior colleges.
Automated welding and other specialties require certification from the American Welding Society, which involves completing a course given by the society and passing a written examination.
As of May 2008, welder fabricators averaged annual salaries of $35,370, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports.
