Job Description for Forensic Toxicologist

Forensic toxicologists are used in science and criminal investigations. Forensic toxicologists specialize in finding the presence of alcohol or drugs through the analysis of blood and urine samples.

    • A forensic toxicologist performs toxicological analysis (analysis of biological samples to look for the presence of toxins like drugs or alcohol), provides expert testimony during court proceedings and performs related duties as required and instructed by the lab director.

    Characteristics

    • Entry level forensic toxicologists are supervised closely while completing toxicological analysis. Senior toxicologists work with more independence, help to train beginner toxicologists and testify as expert witnesses in court proceedings.

    • Forensic toxicologists isolate and identify numerous substances in the body including alcohol, drugs, poisons, metals and carbon monoxide.
