In manufacturing, quality assurance compliance involves evaluating goods to ensure they meet design standards and function properly. Quality assurance inspectors follow guidelines established by manufacturers to evaluate products as a part of the compliance process.
Quality assurance compliance inspectors visually inspect products, which may involve weighing or measuring them or looking for noticeable defects. Inspectors also test products with moving parts or electronics or run scientific tests to ensure the safety of food, cleaning products or other substances.
Other Job Functions
Quality assurance inspectors keep logs about defects or problems and track what percentage of goods fail to pass quality assurance compliance. Inspectors certify or sign off on products that meet the quality standards, and these products then move on for packaging and distribution.
Successful quality assurance compliance inspectors possess attentiveness to detail, the ability to interpret technical drawings to understand the proper specifications of a product, knowledge of arithmetic and the ability to conduct accurate measurements.
Most quality assurance inspector positions require a high school diploma or GED, with employers providing on-the-job training. Employers that hire inspectors to conduct complicated scientific experiments or work with sophisticated computers or other equipment may require an associate or bachelor's degree in a field related to the position, such as chemistry or computer science.
As of May 2008, quality assurance compliance inspectors averaged annual salaries of $33,890, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
