What Is Class III Towing Package?

A Class III towing package is an option that can be bought at the time of a vehicle purchase or can be added by an automotive service after purchase. Towing packages consist of the electrical components and equipment needed in order to pull other vehicles.

Trailer Hitch

A Class III trailer hitch is designed to carry up to 5,000 pounds of weight with up to 500 pounds of weight on the tongue. Sometimes a vehicle with a 2-inch receiver will be classified for a Class III package.

Size

Class III towing packages are designed for midsized pick-ups, vans and SUVs. Smaller vehicles do not possess the capacity to pull large weight loads.

Designation

Class III towing packages are often custom designed for the vehicle for which they are being placed on. Universal Class III packages are available but are not recommended because they do not always fit properly, making for a less-stable ability to pull.

Electrical

All towing packages require a certain amount of electrical work performed in order to have the turn signals and brake lights of the vehicle being towed tied together with the primary vehicle.

Important

Before installing any aftermarket towing package to a vehicle, make sure to find out the vehicle's towing weight limits. It does not make any difference how big the towing package is if the vehicle is not capable of pulling the top weight limit.
