Domestic Cat Pregnancy

Domestic Cat Pregnancy thumbnail
Cat gestation lasts from 61 to 69 days.

Female cats go into heat seasonally and will often time conception so kittens are born when the weather is warm (spring through early fall). A cat typically will not show signs before the third week of pregnancy.

  1. Facts

    • The gestation period of a cat is 61 to 69 days. The cat's body temperature may drop and she may exhibit nesting tendencies 12 to 24 hours before giving birth.

    Indications

    • The first indication that your cat is pregnant may be her nipples becoming enlarged and pink. A veterinarian will diagnose pregnancy through the use of ultrasound, abdominal x-ray, blood test and/or abdominal palpation (feeling for the kittens).

    Considerations

    • Kitten food will provide your expectant cat with all the nutrients she and the developing kittens need during the pregnancy. Additional food supplements should be discussed with your veterinarian before using them.

    Warning

    • It is important to keep your expectant cat free of fleas because flea anemia is the leading cause of death for newborn kittens. Vaccinations should not be administered during pregnancy.

    Problems

    • If you notice vaginal bleeding during pregnancy, or if the cat has strong contractions for an hour with no kitten or doesn't deliver one placenta for every kitten, you need to contact your veterinarian.
