Will an iPod Work With Windows?
When the iPod portable music player was first released by Apple in 2001, it was only compatible with Macintosh computers. Since the release of iTunes for Windows in 2003, though, it's been compatible with PCs as well.

What is an iPod?
-
An iPod is a portable digital music player, manufactured and marketed by Apple. Though it is generally used for music, later generations of the iPod include Internet access, movie-playing technology, and more. There have been several generations of this player, and each successive generation has featured greater maximum hard drive capacity. This determines how much media you can store on the iPod.
iPod Operating Systems
-
All iPods, except for the first generation iPod, are compatible with both Macintosh operating systems and Windows operating systems. Each generation has had different system requirements, though.
-
System Requirements
-
The iPod 2G is compatible with Windows Me/2000/XP. The iPod 3G, 4G, Mini and Mini 2G, and Shuffle and Shuffle 2G are compatible with Windows 2000/XP.
You can see an up-to-date list of all iPod releases and their associated operating system requirements at the Everymac.com link below in Resources.
Compatability
-
You cannot use an iPod on a Mac OS and a Windows OS at the same time; it must be formatted to work with one or the other.
Reformatting
-
You can reformat an iPod if you wish to switch platforms from Windows to Mac. Doing so will erase the hard drive, so make sure you have a copy of all the information you want saved. If your iPod has previously been used on a Mac operating system, you can reformat the iPod so it works with a Windows operating system, and should you need to use it on a Mac again, you can reformat it again.
