Electromagnet Coil Theory

Electromagnets are incredible magnets that can be used for many different purposes. Understanding the science behind electromagnets can expand your knowledge of these fascinating tools--which are widely used in society.

  1. Magnetic Force

    • Magnetic force occurs when the atoms in a piece of metal lose or gains electrons. The atoms will then seek out stray electrons in other pieces of metal, which will actually draw them closer together.

    • Electromagnets are pieces of metal that are magnetized by electricity.

    Theory

    • The electricity that pumps through an electromagnet causes the electrons in the metal to become unbalanced. This creates a powerful magnetic field as long as the electricity is pumped through metal.

    Uses

    • Electromagnets are used in electric bells, circuit breakers, loud speakers and microphones. Powerful electromagnets are also used in junkyards to lift pieces of junk metal.

    Creation

    • Making electromagnets is simple. Attach a wire to a battery and wrap it around a piece of metal. Turn on the current. All electromagnets operate under this basic principal.
