How Toxic Is Borax to Cats?

Borax, or boric acid, is a known toxin in cats. Borax is often used to treat flea infestations or as a cleaning agent. Use extreme caution if using borax near pets, because it does have a toxicity rating with the Environmental Protection Agency.

  1. What Is Borax?

    • Borax is also known as boric acid. It is commonly used as a household cleaner and in pesticides. It inhibits the growth of molds, acts as a deodorizer, and can remove stains.

    Toxicity

    • Use care when using borax, as it is toxic if ingested. The danger to cats is especially high, because they groom themselves by licking their fur and are more susceptible to risk of ingestion.

    Dangers

    • Boric acid is also considered an eye and respiratory irritant. When used in cleaning, gloves and face masks are recommended to avoid injury.

    Symptoms

    • If ingested by a cat, symptoms of boric acid poisoning range from diarrhea and vomiting to muscle weakness and seizures.

    Treatment

    • Unlike other poisons, boric acid cannot be neutralized with activated carbon. The only way to treat boric acid ingestion is through dialysis. If you suspect that your cat has been exposed to borax, contact a veterinarian immediately.
