Internist Job Description

An internist diagnoses and treats diseases and injuries related to a person's internal organ systems.

  1. Work

    • Internists can work in private medical offices or hospitals. They can work long hours and be called in at irregular times.

    Education

    • Internists must have the following education: 4 years of undergraduate school, 4 years of medical school, and 3 to 8 years of internship and residency.

    Licensing and Credentialing

    • In order for a internist to be a credentialed and licensed, they must possess a degree from an accredited school of medicine, complete an accredited program of internal medicine internship, apply for license in state they will be working and pass the national exam.

    Hours

    • Internists work irregular hours. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, over one-third of full-time medical doctors worked on average more than 60 hours a week in 2004.

    How Internists Perform Their Job

    • Internists will use a variety of treatments and diagnostic techniques to treat patients with medication or hospitalization, depending on the condition and prognosis.

    Salary

    • According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, an internist can expect to earn within their first years of practice a salary in the mid $150,000. By time they have practiced for more than five years, they can expect to earn in the upper $230,000 salary range depending on experience, specialty, geographical location and the type of facility in which they work.
