What Are the Duties of a Floor Warden?

High-rise buildings have many measures to ensure safety within their walls. One of these measures is the floor warden. Understanding the duties of a floor warden can help you decide if floor wardens are right for your building.

Duties

A floor warden patrols the hallways in a single floor of your building, watching for and dealing with any potential threats, crises or emergencies.

Know the Floor

A floor warden should know the ins and outs of his floor. He should know the names and needs of everyone who lives in his building and should try to be on speaking terms with them. He should know where emergency tools, like fire extinguishers and emergency phones, are located.

Security

While patrolling his floor, the floor warden should watch for any potential criminal activity. He should call the police if he is witness to a crime, but should not try to intervene unless it is an emergency.

Emergencies

In case of emergency, the floor warden must warn everyone on her floor. Your building may have a PA system the floor warden can use. If not, she may pull the fire alarm, if appropriate, or individually warn each resident.

Evacuation

During evacuations, the floor warden must make sure everyone on his floor has left. He should gather as many people as he can and keep a list of who he's found. He must double check each room before leaving. He should also check any stairs or hallways for anyone who has collapsed.
