What Is the File Extension WIP?

Save

File extensions are tags that are appended to the end of a file so that your computer operating system can identify which software uses that file. The .WIP file extension is used by three different programs.

CyberScrub LLC

  • The CyberScrub software is a disk-wiping tool used to fully remove all data from a hard drive. During the disk-wiping process, the software creates multiple files with the .WIP extension.

East-Tec Eraser

  • East-Tec Eraser is a data destruction program that thoroughly deletes personal, confidential and web surfing data from your hard drive. During the deletion, Eraser replaces all data on your hard drive with .WIP files and then deletes them.

Windows Installer Project

  • Microsoft Windows Visual Studios allows you to create your own applications. When you save a project, it is saved with the.WIP file extension.

Warning

  • Two of the three programs that use the .WIP file extension are disk-deletion programs and you can safely delete any of those files that remain on your hard drive. The third file type represents hours of work, so be sure you want those filed deleted before doing so.

Identification

  • The best way to tell if your .WIP file should be deleted is to look at the file size. Windows Visual Studios creates large files when it saves a project. If the file size is only a few kilobytes, feel free to delete it.
