Vick's Vapor Rub is a topical ointment that is used as a decongestant and to relieve cough associated with the common cold. It may also be used on joints or muscles to temporarily relieve minor aches and pains.

Safety

According to Piedmont OBGYN and OBGYN Associates of Northern Indiana, it is acceptable and considered safe to use Vick's Vapor Rub during pregnancy to relieve cold symptoms.

Safe Application

Vick's Vapor Rub should be applied liberally on the chest and throat, keeping the clothing loose around the neck to help the vapors reach the mouth and nose to reduce cough and nasal congestion. It should not be applied inside the nostrils or on an open wound.

Additional Cold Relief Tips

In addition to Vick's Vapor Rub, pregnant women may also find relief from nasal stuffiness by using a humidifier or steam vaporizer to thin nasal secretions. Saline nose spray may also be used to relieve nasal congestion.

Warning

Use of Vick's Vapor Rub should be discontinued immediately if a rash is noticed. Contact a health care professional if a rash is accompanied by a fever and headache.
